Storytelling runs deep in Tairāwhiti, and this creative energy was uplifted thanks to a grant from Sunrise’s General Fund and support from other sponsors.
The combined contribution made it possible for the Tairāwhiti Writers Hub Collective to deliver a vibrant programme for local writers.
The grant helped the Collective deliver an inspiring 7-day programme of workshops, talks, and community events that brought together writers of all ages and stages. More than 600 people took part, from rangatahi (youth) discovering a love of writing to established authors sharing their craft. The programme followed on from the highly successful Te Kāhui Ngā Kaituhi Māori event, funded by Manatu Taonga and NZSA, creating a remarkable fortnight of creativity, connection, and learning across the region.
Events ranged from intimate writing sessions to large community gatherings, with workshops intentionally designed to be accessible and at varying times, ensuring as many people as possible could participate.
The largest event on the 10-day programme was sponsored and hosted by Turanga Health, on Tuesday the 14th October for local kaumātua.
Regina de Wolf-Ngarimu, a writer, editor, and key organiser, says the support from Sunrise made a significant impact.
“The grant helped us create a space where our writers felt supported, energised, and proud of their craft. The community spirit was amazing. Writing can be solitary, but here in Tairāwhiti it truly isn’t.”
One of the exciting outcomes is the upcoming eBook, AHI: Dawn of Words Anthology, featuring work from 31 writers involved in the hui that will provide a lasting showcase of local talent. A link to purchase the eBook will be available on the Tairāwhiti Writers’ Hub Facebook page.
“The future of writing in Tairāwhiti and Aotearoa, in all shapes and forms, is bright with promise and opportunity,” says Regina.
