Born and raised in Gisborne, Stephen Thomson has always called Tairāwhiti home. Apart from a few years studying at Massey University, where he gained a Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Agriculture and Agribusiness, Stephen has never really left the district and has no plans to do so.
With deep roots in the rural sector, Stephen works with the Rural team at Bayleys Real Estate, giving him a front-row seat to the opportunities and challenges facing the region’s farming and horticultural industries. His community involvement runs just as deep – he is the Founder and Chair of Surfing for Farmers, an initiative supporting mental wellbeing in the rural community, and Vice President of the Poverty Bay A&P Association, where he helps celebrate and promote the best of our district’s agricultural achievements.
Stephen first became involved with Sunrise Foundation through the Grants Committee, where his role gave him insight into the incredible range of work happening across the community. This experience sparked a desire to contribute further, leading to his appointment as a trustee.
For Stephen, Sunrise is about connection; linking generous donors with causes that matter, and ensuring the benefits are felt across generations. He values the Sunrise’s focus on keeping donations local and creating lasting impact through its endowment model.
Outside of work and volunteering, Stephen is passionate about the outdoors – whether it’s surfing, fishing, or exploring the East Coast with family and friends. He believes in getting stuck in, making a difference, and helping ensure Tairāwhiti remains a vibrant, resilient place to live.
