Norman MacLean was well known as a painter and printmaker. He is pictured here amongst many of his pieces.

Before Norman passed away, he wanted to secure a way to give back to the creative community that had provided him with immense enjoyment over his lifetime. Leaving a bequest to the Arts fund with Sunrise meant his gift would keep on giving, year after year, supporting groups involved in visual art, music, theatre, dance, spoken word and film.

“My brother was not only passionate about the arts, he was passionate about encouraging others, especially young people, to take part. As an artist, teacher, and director, he inspired many people to challenge themselves artistically, and by supporting the Sunrise Foundation, he continues to do so,” says Coralie Hunter, Norman’s sister.

Well-known in Tairāwhiti as a prolific painter and printmaker, Norman’s interest in religious themes and ancient culture is reflected in many of his works.

Over the years Norman willingly gave his time and expertise to support the arts, including serving on the Tairāwhiti Museum board, leading arts organisations and mentoring young and emerging artists within our community. Norman was president of Unity Theatre and directed over 20 productions, as well as shows for Musical Theatre Gisborne and local high schools.

If you are considering leaving a gift in your will to support the causes you care about, Sunrise can help. Our smarter giving model invests and protects your gift, so it grows to become an ongoing source of funding.
