What will your legacy be?

A gift in your will is an achievable way to fulfil your charitable giving goals.
Rosemary Johnson's family established a Named Fund with Sunrise in her memory, to support Hospice Tairāwhiti.

It’s estimated that up to 50 percent of adults in New Zealand do not have a will. Wills Month – an initiative of Community Foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand – highlights the importance of having one’s final wishes known.

As part of Wills Month this September, Gisborne law firms Nolans Lawyers and Woodward Chrisp are giving clients the opportunity to leave a gift in their will to Sunrise Foundation – with no fee charged for the amendment.

“Having a will in place avoids confusion after you die and can ensure not only are your loved ones looked after, but charitable causes you care about can also benefit,” says Glenda Stokes, Sunrise executive officer.

Often, we are not able to give as generously while we are alive, so a gift in your will, whether it’s a set amount or percentage of your estate, is an achievable way to fulfil your charitable goals. With more than 50 different Sunrise funds to choose from, you decide what is important to you and what to support.

Nolans Lawyers practice manager Ernie White said there has been an increase in clients considering gifting some of their estate to the community in their wills.

“Giving to a community foundation ensures that you can support many different charities within your community, with even a small bequest in your will or a donation. For clients considering gifts to the community, Sunrise is a good option, says Ernie.
