They arrived as strangers, but left as whanau

Every year fourteen local Year 12 students (called a ‘watch’) are chosen in partnership with Tairāwhiti secondary schools to attend the life-changing 21-day Outward Bound course at Anakiwa, Marlborough Sounds.
Lynda and Janine from Sunrise joined with other supporters to celebrate the successful completion of the Outward Bound course by the latest ‘watch’ of students from our region.

This wouldn’t be possible without the support of Sunrise donors John and Diane Logan, Self-Storage Gisborne and Clark Charitable Trust who are committed to supporting local rangatahi (youth) to attend the renowned course each year.

The latest watch of students was selected from Lytton High School, Tolaga Bay Area School, Ngata Memorial College, Te Waha O Rerekohu Area School, Gisborne Girls High School, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kawakawa mai Tawhiti, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Waiū o Ngāti Porou and Gisborne Boys High School.

Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many proud of how far they were able to push themselves both physically and mentally.

Te Uira Patuwai from Gisborne Girls High School said, “At Outward Bound we arrived as strangers but left as whanau. We’re so grateful for the experience - I’d definitely do it again. ‘Just suck it up buttercup’ became our group saying - it’s what we’d say to each other to get through challenging situations.”
