Local businessman John Larsen has supported Sunrise since its earliest days, and more than a decade later his commitment remains as strong as ever.
Known for his generosity and straight-talking approach, John quickly recognised the value of Sunrise’s endowment model when it launched in 2014. For John, the appeal is simple. Rather than a donation being spent once, Sunrise’s endowment grows over time, creating ongoing support for local organisations.
“I like the fact that you can give coin and that coin doesn’t go away,” he says. “It’s there forever and growing. You can give to any organisation, and it’s gone in five minutes. With Sunrise it’s there forever, growing and supporting local groups.”
Through Larsen Sawmilling, he remains a platinum sponsor, has personally donated to a variety of funds he cares about, and regularly champions Sunrise’s endowment model.
“Sunrise only takes one percent to cover costs, they run on the smell of an oily rag,” he says. “The bulk stays invested, and each year the earnings go back out to the community.”
Looking ahead, John has also included a substantial gift in his will, knowing that as the endowment grows, what's given back will far exceed what he ever put in. If you would like to learn more about leaving a gift in your will to a cause you care about, click here.
