Foundation set for lasting legacy

Foundation set for lasting legacy

20 November 2015 - The Gisborne Herald

Sunrise Foundation chairman John Clarke said the community foundation endowment model is poised to make a difference in the Gisborne district.

A YEAR on from its formation, Gisborne’s first ever community endowment foundation has awarded its first community grant — and is in a position to make seven more in the coming months.

The Sunrise Foundation was launched in Gisborne by The Warehouse founder and philanthropist Sir Stephen Tindall in October last year.

Since then, Sunrise executive officer Glenda Stokes said it had already received donations totalling $590,000, on top of promised donations and bequests worth $4 million.

The foundation had been “overwhelmed” with the generosity of Gisborne people.

The substantial bequests that have been promised to the Sunrise Foundation have far exceeded our expectations at this early stage.

“At the Sunrise Foundation we are all about capital preservation, meaning that any donations we receive will keep on supporting our local charities and organisations forever. This has appealed to our supporters, who like the idea that their donation will keep benefitting our community for generations to come.”
